My great-grand-uncle John George Long (1854-1916) was born in
Missouri and grew up in Kansas. Uncle John spent much of his life working gold
mines in Wyoming and California. He also worked for a while on the streetcar
line in Los Angeles. Like so many of my relatives, he ended up in California
after moving around from place to place, always chasing the American dream.
I wonder, was John the reason that Matilda and Maggie and her girls ended up in California? It seems that was ultimately such a good move for them, though a difficult decision for Maggie to make in the wake of Mac's death. If so, hooray for Uncle John!
ReplyDeleteI've wondered that myself, Cuz. I found more information on him that suggests he was quite the mover and shaker in California, at least in the rough and tumble adventure that was late 19th century California. No doubt his talk of his life there would have been a draw for Maggie, although I definitely get the sense that she created her new life there without much reliance on her brother.
DeleteInteresting information. I am the g. g. grandson of James H. Long who was the brother to your Captain William Long. My line of people often wondered what happened to Capt. Long's family after his death here in Missouri following Lone Jack. I have other info if you wish to contact me.

That's so exciting, Paul! I have a wonderful picture of William and James in their Union soldier uniforms taken around 1860-1862. I have quite a bit of information (letters and photos) about William's widow Margaret Matilda (my GG grandmother) and her children. I'd love to find out what you have and share what I've got. I'll contact you via email. Thanks for posting!
